OUTDOOR WINTER ADVENTURES
Enjoy the Snowy Weather to Come
Whether this year's winter is el niño (warmer than average) or la niña (colder than average), Montgomery County's active and
attractive outdoors opportunities are equally as inviting.
HIKING OR RIDING OUR TRAILS
More than 60 miles of trails crisscross through landscapes that are picturesque when covered in snow, or even just lit by an ever-lengthening sunset. The Perkiomen and Schuylkill River Trails are ideal for cross-country skiing or, as weather permits, a leisurely hike or a session of cardio on a bike.
EXPLORING VALLEY FORGE NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK
It only takes a sprinkling of white to turn the hills of Valley Forge National Historical Park into a site for a rousing afternoon of sledding. Primo spots within the park are near the Memorial Arch and at Wayne Hill. The most thrilling, high-speed ride is available near the Anthony Wayne statue, near Baptist Road.
ICE FISHING AT GREEN LANE PARK
When temperatures plunge sufficiently, the surface of Deep Creek Lake at Green Lane Park will freeze solid. But down below, trout, bluegills and bass are still on the move, providing a challenge for fans of ice fishing.
HORSEBACK RIDES IN EVANSBURG STATE PARK
Saddle up and explore the trails of Evansburg State Park on horseback. Red Buffalo Ranch operates all year round, meaning that excursions are ongoing, regardless of the temperatures. If winter happens to be mild, the sparkly waterways and open landscapes are still beautiful. When blanketed by snowfall - even just a dusting - they are spectacular.
SLIEGH RIDES AT NORTHERN STAR FARM
At one time, not too long ago, the wintertime transportation of choice throughout snowy Montgomery County was by horse-drawn sleigh. The 18th-Century pleasure of gliding across hills and dales can still be enjoyed, even amid the 21st-Century hustle and bustle. Northern Star Farm offers rides to families and groups, but the frosty adventure may be best enjoyed with just a special someone, nestled under the woolen blankets. When snow is scarce, the sleigh can be outfitted with wheels for on-street driving.
SKIING AT SPRING MOUNTAIN ADVENTURES
For novice skiers, Spring Mountain Adventures is a great place to learn how to maneuver moguls while dashing downhill; the staff is friendly, the equipment is plentiful and the lessons are comprehensive. For veterans, the 535-foot drop provides quite the chilly challenge. Plus, its close proximity make it one of the shortest parking-lot-to-chair-lift experiences around.
BALLOON RIDES BY THE U.S. HOT AIR BALLOON TEAM
Soaring over scenic Montgomery County is stunning at any time of year. But in winter, the rides provided by the U.S. Hot Air Balloon Team are especially magical. The vantage displays a landscape glistening in white and wooded trails dotted by deer tracks. Liftoffs from Pottstown Municipal Airport are in the mornings and late afternoons, when the glow of sunrise or sunset makes the experience even more unforgettable.
STROLL THE GROUNDS OF MORRIS ARBORETUM
The North American variety of witch-hazel is more commonly called winterbloom, owing to its seasonal blooms in the January to March timeframe. Discover the fragrance and beauty of more than 70 varieties at Morris Arboretum. A specific witch-hazel scavenger hunt occurs each February, but maps of the route can be downloaded all season long.
