TAKE HER OUT TO EAT
What mother wouldn't relish the chance to escape the kitchen and the cleanup on her special day? Gather the kids, include the grands, and let mom choose her favorite spot for brunch or dinner. Added plus: Let her order first.
ENJOY THE SPRING SUNSHINE
The weather in May is just picture perfect. Why not take the whole family for a walk or bike ride on one of our nearby trails? We've got 91 miles of them to choose from, including more than 20 miles of interconnected trails in Valley Forge National Historical Park.
TAKE A SCENIC DRIVE
Some of our local roads are picture-postcard perfect this time of year, and gas prices are still relatively low. Pile everyone into the van, roll down the windows, pop on the Pandora and go for an old-fashioned drive. One of our favorite local trips includes Route 73, where the east-west travel passes right through quaint Skippack Village. Route 29 is also a recommendable ride, especially as it stretches northward from Collegeville all the way to Green Lane Park.
INDULGE HER SHOPPING INSTINCT
Hand over the credit card, set a meeting spot for an hour or two later and disappear with the kids. Mom can brighten up her spring wardrobe at King of Prussia Mall, Philadelphia Premium Outlets or quaint shopping experiences like the main streets of Ambler, Ardmore and Telford. When the family reunites later, offer to carry her bags and pick a spot for dinner.
SURPRISE HER WITH TICKETS
Montgomery County's lively arts calendar is very active right now. Whether the special woman in your kids' lives is a movie buff, a theater nut or a concert-goer, there are plenty of beautiful, historic theaters nearby to envelop her in crushed-velvet-seated luxury.
ENCOURAGE HER ARTISTIC SIDE
Maybe mom has always wanted to try her hand at a craft like painting or wine-making. Painting with a Twist - Skippack is a fun way to explore the former (with the whole family, in fact), and Stone & Key Cellars (Montgomeryville) can help her with the latter. If she'd rather just view the artistic creations of others, Abington Art Center, Berman Museum of Art and the Berwyn Art & PhotoGallery are all terrific options.
EXPLORE A MUSEUM
Within the Bryn Athyn Historic District - a true gem of Montgomery County - is Glencairn Museum, whose weekend guided tours are at 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. The galleries are stuffed with religious iconography from across the ages, but beyond that, the draw of seeing how a well-to-do industrialist family lived in the early 20th century is inescapable.
