Val Bertoia to Talk about the Sounds from the Metal Sculptures He Has Created
Val Bertoia, following in his father's, Harry Bertoia, footsteps has accomplished many bronze sculptures large and small for indoors and outdoors worldwide. Some of these are sound sculptures, others are water-flowing sculptures, and some move by wind. As part of his talk on how these sounding sculptures are created, Val will display a few of his works and most recent projects. He will also present a retrospective of the Sonambient ® works created by him and his father.
"The spatial and tonal environment created by these sound sculptures is unlike anything you have ever experienced in this world. It is the purest way to connect with God and Nature – just by closing one's eyes and keeping an open mind."
Pottstown Area Artists Guild is sponsoring this talk. It will be held on Tuesday, March 17th, from 7 to 9 PM in the Boyer Gallery at The Hill School Center For The Arts at 760 Beech Street near the intersection of Beech and Sheridan Streets in Pottstown, PA. This talk is free and open to the public.
In the late 60's, Val studied Mechanical Engineering at Indiana Institute of Technology. In 1971, his father asked him to work with him in the Bertoia Studio. Val worked with his father from 1972-1978 on the Sound-Sculpture, which Harry created and is trademarked Sonambient®. They installed many large-scale commissioned metal sculptures. Late in the 1970s, Harry and Val started to distribute the Bertoia Sound-Sculptures worldwide. During those years, Val worked on his own projects including wind-electric systems as derivatives of kinetic sculpture models. In 1978, continuing where Harry left off, Val continued the sculpture-business of his father's legacy. The Bertoia sculptures made after November 1978 are numbered, starting with B-01, and continue to this day now numbering B-2300 and more.
