Photogenic Fall Foliage

Published: 2011-09-19

When Valley Forge and Montgomery County are awash in brilliant autumnal hues, the destination is picture perfect for a memorable fall visit.

The leaf peeping is superb, and several spots, including Valley Forge National Historical Park, boast dazzling displays of oranges, reds and yellows. Named among the top 10 national parks for fall foliage, Valley Forge's 3,500 acres offer many key vantage points.

Among them are Wayne's Woods Picnic Area and the maple trees behind its Mad Anthony Wayne statue, as well as a gorgeous vista right around the corner dotted with authentically replicated soldiers' huts.

Flanked by 50-year-old sugar maples, the quarter-mile driveway to John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove, five miles from Valley Forge, truly illuminates the splendor of the season. This historic home, set along the Perkiomen Creek, is an absolute must-see and is much as Audubon found it in 1803 - a haven for birds and wildlife.

A colorful mountain of mums transforms Ott's Exotic Plants, along Rt. 29 in Schwenksville, every October. This unique botanical gem even features a winding walk-up trail and a waterfall for some stunning photographs. Nearby, on the scenic Perkiomen Trail near Spring Mountain Adventures, also in Schwenksville, the foliage is breathtaking.

At Green Lane Park, bring the wide angle lens to discover a different perspective. Capture the view visible from the observation deck at the highest point of Ft. Washington State Park.
