MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
Kid-Friendly Events in Montgomery County
Celebrate your three-day weekend with the kids on a visit to Montgomery County and our region. We have steam train rides, giraffes and zebras, fireworks celebrations and more.
STEAM TRAIN RIDES
Forgive the Colebrookdale Railroad for puffing out its chest just a little, but May brings multiple opportunities to enjoy the scenic ride while being tugged by a vintage steam engine. These special excursions - a must for train buffs - has the line of passenger cars headed by a Viscose 6, a powerhouse built in 1925 by Baldwin Locomotive Works.
GIRAFFE WELCOME HOME PARTY
Elmwood Park Zoo
Giraffe feeding is back at Elmwood Park Zoo, and this time it's here to stay. Join the celebration as we welcome the zoo's new permanent residents with games, crafts and feedings, plus a special Saturday performance from Lolly and YoYo.
GARDEN RAILWAY GRAND OPENING
Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania
Celebrate the start of summer at the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania. The Arboretum kicks off its summer season with the Grand Opening of its Garden Railway. This year's theme is "Awaken the Senses."
ALICE IN WONDERLAND JR.
Through May 29

GLADWYNE PARADE AND BLOCK PARTY
921 Youngs Ford Road, Gladwyne
The annual Memorial Day parade and block party are sponsored by the Gladwyne Civic Association and held in the heart of the village (Gladwyne Park), rain or shine. The noon parade features children who decorate their bikes, wagons, strollers and selves to navigate the route. When it wraps up, an honorific ceremony takes place, followed by a block party with food and entertainment.
TRAPPE MEMORIAL DAY PARADE
Main Street to Waterworks Park, 230 West. 1st Avenue
Under the theme "Their Sacrifice, Our Freedom," Trappe gathers for a festive 10 a.m. parade from Augustus Lutheran Church (Main & Seventh) to Waterworks Park. The remembrance ceremony that follows features buglers, a ceremonial flag raising, a Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of "The Star Spangled Banner" led by the Norristown Chorale, who will also perform a short concert. From there, a full day of music, food, arts and crafts and kid fun unfolds, lasting until 2 p.m.
HATBORO SUMMER FUN FESTIVAL
York & Horsham Roads
Hatboro blends its patriotic fervor with a healthy dose of summer fun in its annual Summer Fun Festival. For six days, the Borough of Hatboro invites families to ride the rides, sample the food, enjoy the entertainment and gaze at the fireworks (May 27). But on May 30, the festivities take a short, serious pause in the 7 p.m. tribute to the men and women who have served in uniform.
MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND FIREWORKS
May 28 & 29
Sesame Place in nearby Langhorne, Bucks County, celebrates Memorial Day with two nights of fireworks. The spectacular displays go off at 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
