"Spirit of Valley Forge" Celebrated by New Honor
Runner Exemplifying Continental Army's Perseverance
to Be Feted at Annual Rev Run
King of Prussia, Pa. - Courage, determination and
perseverance defined the brave Continental Army soldiers who struggled
through and survived the elements at Valley Forge during their winter
encampment of 1777-78. Now, their legacy will live on through the
"Spirit of Valley Forge - Triumph Over Adversity" award to be
introduced during this April's sixth annual Valley Forge Revolutionary
5-mile Run at Valley Forge National Historical Park.
The Valley
Forge Convention and Visitors Bureau, which produces the Run, is seeking
nominations for its first-time "Spirit" award to acknowledge an
individual who's participated in the event as a milestone of their
personal triumph over a significant challenge. This year's Run and the
inaugural award presentation will take place April 17.
"Many of
our past runners have so inspired us with their personal stories that we
designed this award for them, as a way to both communicate and
commemorate the story of strength and survival that is Valley Forge,"
said Bureau President Paul Decker.
Runners who've lived such
stories are encouraged to nominate themselves, and anyone who knows a
runner they believe is deserving of the honor may submit a 250-word
essay detailing the challenges and triumphs and how they exemplify the
enduring spirit of Valley Forge. Guidelines for nominations and
registration information are available at www.revolutionaryrun.org. Nominations must be received by April 2, 2011.
The
Run raises funds for trail improvements and other initiatives at the
Park and also comprises a three-mile walk, one-mile youth fun run for
kids 6 - 12 and family health and fitness expo featuring refreshments
and healthy living, exercise and running related exhibitors.
The Valley Forge Convention and Visitors Bureau, Ltd. is
a nonprofit, membership-based sales and marketing organization that
aggressively promotes the Valley Forge area and Montgomery County as a
convention site and leisure visitor destination by encouraging patronage
of its 500-plus member hotels, restaurants, attractions and services.
The Bureau's Web site, at www.valleyforge.org, serves visitors, meeting planners, tour operators and residents.
